Honeymoon Survival Guide

Most of you have probably gone on vacation before, but there’s something extra special about traveling for your honeymoon! So today I want to give you a few tips on how to make the most out of your honeymoon, with a few practical tidbits for the planner inside me who wants everything to be perfect for you.

Dont. Forget. Your. Passport. If you’re traveling internationally, make sure you check your passport expiration date. There would be nothing worse than showing up at the airport to start your honeymoon and not be able to go because of an expired passport. In all the wedding planning details, this is one thing that can fall by the wayside, so give yourself some time and check that sucker out. Some countries require your passport be valid 6 months ahead of your travel date and it’s better to be safe than sorry, so I definitely recommend renewing if you’re close to that deadline.

To avoid an early vacation burn out, give yourself time to rest, both after your wedding and during your honeymoon. There is something so romantic about jetting off to your honeymoon the night of your wedding, but in reality you’re going to be seriously tired. Even just a few buffer days between your wedding and leaving for your honeymoon will give you some time to recharge your batteries and be ready for vacation. And during your honeymoon, be sure to have at least some rest time, especially if you have a ton of exciting activities planned. You don’t want to be overtired and you definitely don’t want to get sick! A little bit of rest can go a long way.

Don’t be shy. Tell people you’re on your honeymoon! Get a shirt that says Mr. & Mrs. or Honeymoon Bound, or the date of your wedding, to make sure everyone knows you’re special. Some airlines and hotels even give upgrades or small gifts to honeymooners (hello free champagne!) so it’s worth it to be a little extra and shout it from the rooftops.

BYOS. Bring your own sunscreen. If you’re planning a tropical vacation or even just a trip where you plan on being outside at all, bring your own sunscreen. That stuff is expensive! Seriously though, pack as much as you have space for so you’re not stuck paying $30 a pop at your resort or hotel. Along the lines of things to bring with you, I also recommend bringing your own snorkel and fins if you plan on being somewhere with water activities. You can rent them at most resorts, but again that’s another cost that adds up, plus the quality of the rentable ones aren’t usually the best.

Take advantage of your surroundings. This may be more general travel advice, but especially for newlyweds who don’t have a ton of cash to blow on fancy dinners and extravagant breakfasts, hitting up a local grocery store and stocking your hotel room with booze and snacks can save you some serious dough. And you can even make an adventure out of it, hitting the streets to find some yums and see the town with your babe.

Most of all, the best thing I can tell you, is to freakin’ relax. RELAX. The whole point of a honeymoon is to unwind after planning and executing your perfect day, so make that a priority. Treat yourself if you can, even if it’s something small like getting a bottle of champagne to share while watching the sunset. And don’t stress about getting gifts for people. You may be tempted to make an extensive list of souvenirs for people, but you want to enjoy your time away, so seriously don’t stress about it. They’ll understand, I promise.

No matter what you do, whether you travel abroad or just spend some quiet time alone with your new spouse, I wish you a relaxing honeymoon and a fantastic start to the rest of your lives together.
