Themed Weddings | How to Rock Them
Happy Halloween, my spooky brides and grooms! In the spirit of the holiday and getting into costume, I want to discuss the topic of themed weddings. Whether you’re planning a festive holiday wedding or centering your theme around a common love that you and your fiancée share, this post is for you! Themed weddings are something a lot of people shy away from, but there’s definitely a way to do it right all the while keeping your vision alive.
The first step in planning your themed wedding is to pick, well, the theme. Whether your theme is specific, such as a “Halloween,” or more general like “travel,” nailing it down, in either a general or specific sense, is the first step to focusing your vision and deciding what elements to include in on your big day.
The next part in the planning process will be incorporating your themed elements strategically. The problem that a lot of themed weddings face is that they go overboard on the theme aspects, which can often end in the event seeming over the top, muddled, or cheesy. My favorite way to do this is including themed accents into your décor. For example, my couple Vanessa and Kelly hosted a gorgeous Dia de Los Muertos wedding where their centerpieces incorporated bright, vibrant flowers paired with white and black linens for a stunning yet balanced effect. In a similar vein, you can add ocean elements like starfishes and seaglass to a beach wedding or fashion your seating arrangement chart like a movie poster for a cinema centered theme. Remember, moderation is key when it comes to décor!
Attire for the bridal party and guests is another great way to include themed aspects into your wedding. Accessories, such as jewelry, shoes, and hair pieces, add that perfect touch of theme to your outfit without going overboard. You can even let your guests in on the fun and ask them to dress according to a specific color scheme for different types of year or even give out thematic favors. Providing guests with custom made sugar skull masks was another way my couple incorporated Dia de Los Muertos into their wedding day, which was great for using the theme to ensure everyone went home with a truly memorable gift.
The key to a successful themed wedding is to be unique and, most of all, be yourself. Anything can be a theme, from something specific like a particular movie or general like a season. Having fun with themed elements is the best way to let your personalities shine while ensuring your wedding has a natural and cohesive feel.
