Advice for the New Year

With the start of a new year (and wow, a brand new decade!), many people, especially couples getting married this year, focus on setting goals for self improvement. New Year’s resolutions are a great way to plan out the year ahead and set your sights on the future. At the same time, there is such a thing as too many goals! So, with the onset of 2020, I’d like to share a few bits of advice on taking care of yourself and making plans to gear up for your wedding date.

Whatever your New Year’s resolutions may be, it’s important to make smart and healthy choices. You’re getting ready for a very big day and want to feel and look your absolute best. That being said, don’t go nuts on the fad dieting or doing cardio until you pass out. Changes should be made gradually and with enough time to make adjustments. Statistically, it takes about three weeks for a habit to stick; it’s a marathon, not a sprint. Weight loss or a new hair color doesn’t happen overnight, and it’s important to plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time and leeway to make healthy adjustments.

Everything in moderation. Making a bunch of changes to your lifestyle or diet all at once has “burnout” written all over it. Trying to lose 80 pounds before your wedding may not be realistic, but you can eat healthier and exercise 2-3 times a week. Balance is key when it comes to resolutions and introducing small things here and there is the best way to make realistic, steady progress that will have you feeling your best.

Make it stick! Adding hobbies or changing up your life doesn’t need to end just because the wedding took place. It’s okay to take a much needed and deserved break after, but taking too much time off post-nuptials might negate all those positive habits or hard-earned goals. So take time to reflect on what changes you might want to carry forward as you begin your new married life!

Be yourself. As I always say, the best thing you can do when it comes to anything involving weddings is be yourself. If you want to make resolutions and hit your goals, do it! If you want to focus on planning and keep doing what you’re doing, that’s great as well! Just because you’re getting married doesn’t mean you need to make a bunch of drastic changes: weddings are tough enough as it is. Overall, being happy and healthy is the most important thing.
